The GBCC Acts as a Catalyst for Commercialization Success in Georgia

Posted by: Maria Thacker on 4/27/2010

To increase commercialization success rates in Georgia, there needs to be a strong commercialization infrastructure to bring technological innovation from bench to market.  Georgia has previously had no centralized repository of resources to assist entrepreneurs in licensing and commercializing new technology.  Sources of information are often difficult to define.   Many people that wish to commercialize new technology don’t know where to prioritize their efforts and gather the necessary information to enable success.

Increasing the economic competitiveness of Georgia depends on the ability of entrepreneurs to successfully commercialize new technology by combining existing resources in ways that act as social knowledge networks across previously isolated resource centers.  A rich entrepreneurial social network will enable stronger collaborative relationships, increase access to resources and allow entrepreneurs learn from each other’s experiences.

The recent launch of the Georgia Bioscience Commercialization Center (GBCC) is an example of a needed centralized resource.  The objective of the GBCC is to provide the entrepreneurial community with a social networking bridge by providing access to a variety of existing resources through a central hub.

The GBCC acts as a one-stop-shop for entrepreneurs to gain access to services that facilitate commercialization success rates in Georgia.  The GBCC provides a faculty of life science executives that provide expert opinion on all the aspects of technology commercialization free of charge.  Each facility member represents a unique resource (i.e. consultants, VCs, MAC, ATDC, and CEOs of existing companies) and the GBCC brings this network together to create single collaborative problem solving network.  The GBCC removes the barriers of resource isolation and increases collaboration and the potential for commercialization success and economic development in Georgia.
